Final Proposal

1.   Gary Jules - Mad World
2.   My song could easily be broadcasted on many different music channels as it is does not only belong to one genre. Mad World would fit into the genre soft/pop rock. As a result of this my music video would attract a larger audience as it is not only targeting one genre and therefore fans of pop and rock genres will watch and enjoy this song. The channel where rock fans will be able to view this song would be on Mtv Rocks. It is a channel owned by MTV Networks International and mainly focuses on alternative rock and indie, with occasional alternative hip hop songs. My music video would be perfect for this channel as it fits into a soft/pop rock genre and can easily be shown on their shows like ‘The Official UK Rock Chart’ and 'Biggest! Hottest!'. The other channel it could be shown on is Smash Hits which is a free channel so people do not have to pay to watch this channel. Therefore it will attract a lot more people as people may not be able to subscribe to music channels such as Mtv.  My music video could be shown on the programme ‘Pop Domination’ which plays new and old pop videos.
3.   My target audience would be people in the socio economic groups C2, D and E. This is because people above the C2 group tend to enjoy classical music. Whereas the people below tend to like mainstream music that you would see playing on music channels. The age range that i am targeting would be 15-39 year olds. This is because people under he C1 group are exposed to mainstream music from a young age so by the time they grow up they already have preference in their choice of music.
4.   My music video is going to be a narrative video. The song that i have chosen is a very slow song so i have to make sure the editing fits in with the song otherwise it will not look very good. What i will do in my music video is to make sure that i have long scenes compared to short scenes because that is something you would see in a music video that is fast paced. Also there will not be quick cuts as it is not expected in a slow song and it would be a complete contrast and take away from the powerful meaning of the song.
5.   In my music video i will have a lot of different camera angles as this will allow me to get the best shots and overall make my music video the best it possibly can. I will add other effects such as black and white screen.  . Unique shots that i will incorporate into my music video would be crane shots, crab shots, high/low angle shots, over the shoulder shot and many more.

Possible Ideas

Idea 1

This will be a narrative music video of the rap song ‘No Love’ by Eminem featuring Lil Wayne. I want this video to relate to the lyrics so the idea is of two young students that love each other. The boy gets the girl pregnant and the girl is scared to tell him that she is having his child. She shows her boyfriend the pregnancy test but he thinks they are too young to have a baby. So he tells her to have an abortion otherwise he will leave her. Now the girl is in a dilemma as she wants to keep the baby. In the end the girl ends up committing suicide.

Locations

  • College
  • On the streets
  • My house
  • Park

Idea 2
The song is Mad World by Gary Jules. This is going to be a narrative music video. This video will have different actors in it. Scenes that will be shown would be people in a rush to show how mad the world really is. Other scenes would include a student coming to a new school where no one knows him and he feels alone. We then will see scenes where he completely by himself as he wonders the world alone.

Locations
  • College
  • Birmingham town
  • My house
  • On the streets
·
Idea 3

The third idea is to a documentary about underage drinking. I will conduct interviews with young people about their views on underage drinking. In this video i will show a lot of stats that will backup why underage drinking is wrong and how it can have a big impact on society and their lives.

Locations
  • Interview random young people on the streets
  • Interview young people in college

Numb/Encore - Jay Z/Linkin Park

Thank you, thank you, thank you, you're far too kind

Now can I get an encore, do you want more
Cookin raw with the Brooklyn boy
So for one last time I need y'all to roar

Now what the hell are you waitin for
After me, there shall be no more
So for one last time, nigga make some noise

Get em Jay

Who you know fresher than Hov'? Riddle me that
The rest of y'all know where I'm lyrically at
Can't none of y'all mirror me back
Yeah hearin me rap is like hearin G. Rap in his prime
I'm, young H.O., rap's Grateful Dead
Back to take over the globe, now break bread
I'm in, Boeing jets, Global Express
Out the country but the blueberry still connect
On the low but the yacht got a triple deck
But when you Young, what the f**k you expect? Yep, yep
Grand openin, grand closin
God your man Hov' cracked the can open again
Who you gon' find doper than him with no pen
just draw off inspiration
Soon you gon' see you can't replace him
with cheap imitations for DESE GENERATIONS

Now can I get an encore, do you want more
Cookin raw with the Brooklyn boy
So for one last time I need y'all to roar

Now what the hell are you waitin for
After me, there shall be no more
So for one last time, nigga make some noise

What the hell are you waiting for

[sighs] Look what you made me do, look what I made for you
Knew if I paid my dues, how will they pay you
When you first come in the game, they try to play you
Then you drop a couple of hits, look how they wave to you
From Marcy to Madison Square
To the only thing that matters in just a matter of years (yea)
As fate would have it, Jay's status appears
to be at an all-time high, perfect time to say goodbye
When I come back like Jordan, wearin the 4-5
It ain't to play games witchu
It's to aim at you, probably maim you
If I owe you I'm blowin you to smithereeens
Cocksucker take one for your team
And I need you to remember one thing (one thing)
I came, I saw, I conquered
From record sales, to sold out concerts
So muh'f****r if you want this encore
I need you to scream, 'til your lungs get sore

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take

I've become so numb I can't feel you there
I've become so tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

I've become so numb
Can I get an encore, do you want more (more...)
I've become so numb
So for one last time I need y'all to roar
One last time I need y'all to roar

We start off with a close up shot of the name ‘ROXY’ which is most likely the venue name in which they are performing at. This could be an iconic venue, hence the reason why they are showing it in the music video.

The camera then zooms out to introduce which artists’ concert it actually is. Next is a close up shot of a persons hand playing an instrument. The camera then moves towards the main act which is Jay Z in the middle of the stage performing the song with a band behind him. The shot tells you that they playing at a concert in the venue 'ROXY'

The camera then goes towards the fans showing they’re hands and also showing them enjoying the performance. We also see a point of view shot of one of the fans looking at Jay Z while he performs. The makes the whole concert more real as we can see the concert through the eyes of one of the fans.

The camera then turns towards another artist as he sings his part. The camera then zooms out to show the whole stage and people’s hands in the air. Archive footage is shown when Jay Z arrives on a plane. The footage then shows how they prepared for the concert and all the fun they had in the process. All the archive footage is shown in black and white while the actual performance is shown in colour. The next shot shows the fans enjoying the concert and the scene flicks back and fourth from archive footage to actual performance. We then see a close up of one of the fans throwing up the famous Jay Z hand sign. This music video mostly uses a medium shot throughout the video and does not have very much special effect as these are not common in a performance music video.

Love the way you lie - Eminem featuring Rihanna

Lyrics

[Chorus - Rihanna]
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
That's all right because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
That's all right because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

[Eminem - Verse 1]
I can't tell you what it really is, I can only tell you what it feels like
And right now it's a steel knife in my windpipe
I can't breathe but I still fight while I can fight
As long as the wrong feels right it's like I'm in flight
High off her love, drunk from my hate, it's like I'm huffin' pain
And I love it the more I suffer, I suffocate
And right before I'm about to drown, she resuscitates me, she fckkin' hates me
And I love it, "wait, where you goin'?"
"I'm leavin' you," "no you ain't come back"
We're runnin' right back, here we go again
It's So insane, cause when it's goin' good it's goin' great
I'm superman with the wind at his back, she's Lois Lane
But when it's bad it's awful, I feel so ashamed I snap
Whose that dude? I don't even know his name
I laid hands on her
I'll never stoop so low again
I guess I don't know my own strength

[Chorus]
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's all right because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's all right because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

[Eminem - Verse 2]
You ever love somebody so much you can barely breathe
When you with em you meet and neither one of you even know what hit em
Got that warm fuzzy feeling
Yeah them chills used to get em
Now you're getting f****n' sick of lookin' at em
You swore you'd never hit em, never do nothin' to hurt em
Now you're in each other's face spewin' venom in your words when you spit em
You push pull each other's hair
Scratch claw hit em throw em down pin em
So lost in the moments when you're in em
It's the rage that's the culprit, controls you both
So they say it's best to go your seperate ways
Guess that they don't know ya
Cause today that was yesterday
Yesterday is over, it's a different day
Sound like broken records playin' over
But you promised her next time you'll show restraint
You don't get another chance
Life is no nintendo game, but you lied again
Now you get to watch her leave out the window
Guess that's why they call it window pane

[Chorus]
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's all right because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's all right because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

[Eminem - Verse 3]
Now I know we said things, did things, that we didn't mean
And we fall back into the same patterns, same routine
But your temper's just as bad as mine is, you're the same as me
When it comes to love you're just as blinded
Baby please come back, it wasn't you, baby it was me
Maybe our relationship isn't as crazy as it seems
Maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano
All I know is I love you too much to walk away though
Come inside, pick up the bags off the sidewalk
Don't you hear sincerity in my voice when I talk?
Told you this is my fault, look me in the eyeball
Next time I'm pissed I'll aim my fist at the drywall
Next time there won't be no next time
I apologize even though I know it's lies
I'm tired of the games I just want her back
I know I'm a liar if she ever tries to f****n' leave again
I'ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire
Just gonna

[Chorus]
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's all right because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's all right because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

First we get a medium close up shot of Rihanna singing with the background of a house being burnt down. This is done as it goes with the lyrics ‘Just gonna stand there and watch me burn’. We then see a women sitting down with fire in her hands. This implies that she is not afraid and can handle anything thrown at her. It also goes with the lyrics ‘Well that's all right because I like the way it hurts’. This implies that she has been so hurt so many times that is she used to the feeling of pain and now she is started to like it. Next shot is of a man and a women sleeping in bed together when the women looks at his hands and sees a phone number. The camera goes to a medium close shot of his hands and shows that the man has been cheating. We then go straight to the Eminem who we see rapping in a stranded location. You can tell no one has been there for a while from the size of the grass. Eminem raps as the sun sets. The shot that is shown next is a crab shot as the camera goes from one side to the other. The camera then goes into a crane shot were we are looking down on Eminem. This shows he is vulnerable and powerless.

Questionnaire + Summary

I created a questionnaire to gain an insight to what people like and expect to see in a music video. This questionnaire will help me when it comes to the time when I have to create my very own music video and I will incorporate the main views into my music video to make it as successful as possible. Summary

Question 1

RnB   II
Indie   I
Rap   I
HipHop   I
Grime  I
Country
Pop   II
Rock   II
Other

As you can see above there were three genres that were equally popular with my audience. The three genres are Rap, Rock and Pop with all three getting two votes each. Joint in second place is Indie, Rap, HipHop and Grime with one vote each and the rest with no votes. From the information that i have gathered i have come to the conclusion that none of the genres by itself are far better than any other genre. so therefore i may choose a song that is a mixture of genres to make my music video attract a larger audience.

Question 2

Here are some of the most popular choices:
Rohanna - Rockstar 101
Katy B - On A Mission
Beyonce - Sweet Dreams

Question 3

Performance   IIIII
Simple   I
Abstract   I
Range of locations   I
Confident   I
Outfits   I
Atmosphere   I

From the above we have a clear favourite with performance being the most liked thing in their favourite music video of all time. The rest are tied with one vote each. As people like to see performance in music videos, I will incorporate elements of performance in my music video as I want my music video to be the best it possibly can. Another important thing in my opinion is that I think the people performing have to be confident as it would increase the success rate of the music video.

Question 4

T.V   IIIIII
Internet   IIII
Music videos

Most people said they prefer to watch music videos on TV with internet being the second most popular. Personally if I were to show my music video I would put it on TV and on the internet. This is because on TV the audience is limited as I would only have a national audience and only people who watch the music channels the video will be shown. However if you put the music video on a site like youtube then the audience base goes from national to global and people can view the video over and over again. But on TV they cannot do this as other music videos will also be shown so you would have to wait for a particular video to come on.

Question 5

Good narrative   IIIIII
Good lip sync
Number of locations   I
Special effects   III
Other

We have a clear favourite with good narrative taking 60% of the votes. Special effects get 30% while the number of locations gets 10%. When making my music video I have make sure it has a good narrative as this is very important as the audience see that the narrative has to be good for the music video to be successful. The audience also like to see special effects so I will adds special effect where necessary in my music video to gain some extra marks and also increase the enjoyment of the viewers. Another thing that I think is vital for a music video to work is the number of locations. Even though it was not very popular with the audience I think that if you don’t have enough different locations then it makes the music video boring and also you need a number of locations to get the good marks.

Question 6

Eminem   IIII
Lady Gaga   III
Michael Jackson   III

Eminem is the most popular artist with the most votes just edging past Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson by one vote. This is very convenient because one of ideas I was thinking about was to do a eminem song. Eminem is know all over the world and if i make a music video for one of his songs it would easily attract a lot of people due to his popularity.

Question 7

Most if not all the music videos people chose where narrative music videos. That tells me that narrative music videos are popular with people and that I should do a narrative based video for my music video to attract the most viewers. Examples of music videos that were given are:
Take it of – Kesha
What goes around comes around – Justin Timberlake

Question 8

Good narrative   IIII
Special Effects   I
Imagination   I
Performance   II
Props   I
Atmosphere   I

Once again having a good narrative is vital for the music video to be a success as the audience are looking for a music video where scenes relate to the lyrics.

Question 9

Mtv Base   IIII
The Box   I
Kiss   I
Mtv Rocks   IIII

Mtv Base and Mtv Rocks are the clear winners with Four votes each. If I were to make a music video I would make sure that it plays on Mtv as this is where the majority of the audience watch music videos. So by making sure that it plays on Mtv Base and Mtv Rocks my music video would get viewed a lot and would have the best chance of being successful.

Question 10

1-5      I
6-10   IIIIII
11-15
16-20
Over 20   III

On average people watch 6-10 music videos a week. This is a good figure as there is a good chance that people would see my music video if it were to be shown on music channels and on the internet.

From the information that i have gathered from the questionnaire i have come to the conclusion that my music video must be narrative based as that is what the audience most like to see in music videos. I also have to appoint actors that are confident and can put in a good performance. Futhermore i need to make sure that i film in a number of locations so that my music video is not boring and keep the viewers at the edge of their seats.
